Dermaroller is essentially a simple microneedling device that is used in improving acne scars, surgicalscars, stretch marks, wrinkles and also facial rejuvenation.
How does it look?:- A standard device has a handle mounted with a cylindrical roller studded with fine microneedles ofvaried length (0.5mm - 2.00mm) arranged in rows. This is a hand-held device.
How does it work?:- When performing treatment, the roller is glided over the skin. This rolling movement causes theneedles to pierce the stratum corneum leading to release of growth factors which stimulate formationof new collagen, elastin and capillaries.
What happens before procedure?:- A topical anaesthetic is applied on the treatment area for upto an hour. The area is then cleaned andthe roller is moved over the skin about 10-20 times in vertical, horizontal and oblique directions. Pinpoint bleeding is usually the end point of the procedure and can be easily controlled.
What to expect after procedure?:- There is redness on the treated area for about 24-48 hours after procedure followed by pin point scabsthat usually fall on in 3-4 days time. During this time strict sun protection and hydration is very important.
How many sessions are needed?:- Usually 4-6 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart are required.
Is it safe?:- Yes
Are there any complications?:- There are mostly NO complications if post procedure care has been taken as suggested by the treating doctor.
I have effectively used dermaroller in my practice. This definitely gives good visible results and is a verycost effective treatment for scars, wrinkles and stretch marks.
